BBC News (also known as the BBC News Channel) is a British free-to-air television news channel. It was launched as BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997 at 5:30 pm as part of the BBC's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to Sky News, which had been running since 1989. For a time, looped news, sport and weather bulletins were available to view via BBC Red Button.

Project Manager (Current Employee) says"This place is full of bullies. I worked in BBC Learning, CBBC, Sports and Cbeebies. The staff are bullies and management know about this but let you get bullied and when you speak up they will target you and make you seem like the one causing trouble. They lie and twist things. The management in Learning all stick together and will try their best to bring you down. Unless your face fits in with their team. Childrens department were very hard to please, I worked on several projects as a grade 4 and found the management not helpful, friendly or supportive. They have the worst PMs. I have been in situations where I've worked 2 weeks with no breaks, been told to drive to locations tired, been told to carry heavy equipment breaking health and safety policies. But if you speak up they will target you. Its the same culture across all BBC sites. I seen people with no experience whose face fits in get promoted and others who have been there for years not be promoted. They claim to understand diversity but the BBC doesn't. They do not understand or respect diversity."

Unfortunately, while it sounded good, my skills were taken advantage of and the pay was well below what I should have been getting."

Executive (Former Employee) says"The benefits are pretty good but there have been no raises in years and poor salaries to begin with (despite the fact that they send out tons of memos about how profitable the company has been). SO many good people have left in the past few years and yet nobody seems to care. There is little to no value placed on work/life balance and with the workload constantly increasing it doesn't look like that will get better. Job security is non-existent for most and the morale is very low. The new management is smart but mostly hire people they already have worked with rather than giving a chance to the people there who are working hard. In general there are some great people who work there, but I wouldn't recommend this company with all the other cable nets out there who pay more competitively and place a higher value on their hard-working employees. Cons: no work/life balance, poor pay, no raises in years"
PMA (Former Employee) says"I worked here for 3 years on contracts, and noticed a culture pattern across all the BBC sites from London to Salford to Birmingham. Its very clicky and if you dont fit in you will struggle here. I worked in CBBC and the level of bullying is high, the unit management team knew I was being bullied but didn't support me. I went for an interview in Radio 4 and was told i was too young to fit in. Discrimination but as they stick together like a pack of wolves, they get away with it. A manager also shouted in the office area about a personal issue of mine. This place can be a great place but there is a lot of issues stopping it, people see BBC then get blinded by the unethical issues as they want that brand. There are great projects to work on and you can be flexible with your work but overall i wouldn't recommended it. It is also very competitive, you have to really prove yourself if you want to achieve here. I was told that i could come back anytime i wanted but i neverreturned. Cons: No diversity, Long hours, low pay"

Web Developer says"I have been working at BBC Cons: * Management seem to be confused about what they're trying to achieve, so goals constantly shift and there seems to be no long-term commitment to anything. * The pay is low. There's little opportunity for movement around the company or promotion and I think middle-management and line-managers hide behind this rather wishy-washy "red tape" and excuses of the licence fee to not pay their staff properly. * Suspect they are biased against women. Especially in the technical world. No women seem to get promoted or good projects to run. Could just be bad luck. * Developers seem to be treated like cattle. Bartered for and shunted about. Also, don't think technical opinions are listened to. It's almost as if developers are the lowest rung and are to be treated like kids."

One reason for this is because owning your own project is not encouraged. Management is based on length of service and not talent. Management is also based on who you know not what you know. Run by middle aged white men. Do not understand the value of their staff because they don't have to think about costs. Lost any sense of creativity because of the bureaucracy and political correctness."

Little if any chance for advancement. The place is full of yes people but for those who challenge the status quo you will find yourself stagnating. It is like working in a Stalinist organization."
News Director says"I have been working at BBC Cons: The management, with a very few exceptions, are absolutely terrible. They abuse the pay and grading system completely. Some managers receive annual bonuses based upon their ability to keep the pay bill low. The annual appraisal system is simply a paper exercise, once again so managers can receive performance bonuses. Most staff ,that I know, do not see any positive outcomes as result of this box ticking exercise. Management is mainly by e mail. Some managers have very little understanding what their staff do day day and the contribution they make to the output. The audience is supposed to be at the heart everything we do, I see very little evidence of that. What Sky News does, what the tabloids lead with and what focus groups claim to want appears to dictate the daily agenda. BBC World News has a much more balanced approach."
Technologist says"I have been working at BBC Cons: The senior management are utterly clueless and want to destroy the cooperation. Too much is being sold off, or outsourced. Morale is very low. Our offices are being sold and we are moving into London which is difficult to get to, and unsuitable for the purpose of our work. Everyone assumes you meet famous people, particularly car insurers! The beauracracy is getting worse, and we waste too much time doing stuff that other people used to do, before they were either sold off, or made redundant. Too many layers of management and poor communication."

Career progression is difficult, especially if you're not a 'creative'. The content-creation side of the business is very separate from the corporate / business side, and so you have to work to gain credibility and trust."
